In Vermont, Christmas means snow and colder weather. While we all hopefully remember to slow down while driving, we need to remember to pay more attention while walking as well. Driveways, steps, and porches will all freeze sooner than the road. It may not look slippery when you go outside, but it only takes one misstep to end up flat on your back in the snow.

Here are a few simple electrical holiday safety tips to follow to keep your family safe.

  • Use flameless battery operated candles to reduce the risk of fire hazards. If you do use real candles, never leave them unattended.
  • Inspect last years’ electrical decorations for damage before using them this year.
  • Keep your real Christmas tree watered to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Don’t overload your electrical outlets.
  • Inspect your extension cords for damage and make sure your pets don’t chew on them.
  • Keep combustibles at least three feet away from the woodstove or the fireplace.
  • Turn off and unplug all decorations before you go to bed just in case.
